Controlling Blowing Litter with
Our Spectrum of Products
New Waste Concepts cover materials do an excellent job of controlling blowing litter because of the polymer content in the material. NWC staff often demonstrate the adhesive characteristics of the product by using the 'inverted hand' test (see photo at right below) showing that the chemical content othe product attaches itself to plastics andother matters in the landfill, even on vertical or upside down surfaces. This will not occur with any other paper mulch or even wood fibre based slurry material.
However, blowing litter is not just a matter of control at the end of the day when putting down or applying the daily cover. All throughout the day, as compactrs do their job, blowing plastic bags are often freed from the waste. These free, floating bags can float in the air for hundreds of yards before they are cought in a tree along the property line of the landfill. NWC provides three different types of portable litterfences to augment the collection process throughout the day until the final daily cover is applied (The photo on the left is our Litterfence Standard filled with paper.)
Because of the way our product works at the end of the day, and the material is so sticky, several of our sites use the ConCover or ProGuard materials to spray from the downwind side of our litterfencing, which knocks the collected paper and plastic from the net and glues it to the ground. This is done to reduce the loading on the net until the paper can be picked up. Thus, the stickiness and the durability even in heavy rains make this an ideal product for controlling blowing litter.
