Controlling Fires in Landfills;
Non-Flammability of Cover Materials

New Waste Concepts' spectrum of cover materials are inflammable in accordance with ASTM standards Method D 4982-89 which is the test when the material is dry rather then the test when the product is still wet under Method D 4982-92. NWC uses gypsum, not borax, as the chemistry behind making its product nonflammable. The reason is the borax has a negative and deadly impact on bacteria and microbes in the landfill which are focused on digesting the waste.

ConCover 180, ConCover SW, ProGuard IIB Plus, ProGuard IIB and ProGuard SB, all have pasted the non-flammability standards under the above referenced ASTM methods processes.

In addition, the ConCover products have been used for extinguishing fires in both MSW landfills, as well as MSW balefills. At the Rapid City, South Dakota landfill, the site manager has used the product to extinguish landfill fires. At the St Lucie County Balefill facility in Florida, the site manager not only has used the ConCover 180 material to extinguish fires, but he also has found that the use of NWC's cover material has helped him reduce the incidence of fire. In particular, the normal process of placing the precompacted bales of waste allow for passage of oxygen between the bales. As the waste begins to biodegrade and the temperatures increase to the 140 degree Fahrenheit range, the injection of oxygen can often create the right environment for fires. As you will note under the tab dealing with odors and VOC control, NWC's spectrum of cover materials can act as a vapor barrier restricting and suppressing the free flow of organics and odors that might be gassing off at ambient temperatures. This same ability to restrict the upward movement of gas also restricts the downward flow of oxygen into the landfill material below.
